Chandler's Pick | The Everything War by Dana Mattioli

-
-
Why we chose this: Perhaps picking this as an indie bookstore owner is cliche but I'm standing by it. I concede Amazon has revolutionized commerce for consumers, created great conveniences and improved access in remote communities. However, it's worth asking ourselves, at what cost? For example, $10,000,000 in books sold through Amazon creates 11 jobs in Canada, while that same amount spent at Bookstores creates 43. Amazon robs local economies of jobs, tenants, and tax revenue - and arguably community infrastructure as a result. It eliminates well paying jobs in the economy and replaces them with incredibly low paying wage work. What's the cost of the convenience Amazon brings, and are we ready to talk seriously about what we're willing to lose for it?
-
About this bookLina Khan's groundbreaking paper in 2017 accused Amazon of monopolistic practices similar to the historical Standard Oil. Despite Amazon's widespread popularity and customer obsession, Khan's scrutiny ignited a fire in Washington, eventually leading to her appointment as head of the FTC. In 2023, the FTC filed a landmark monopoly lawsuit against Amazon. In his exposé, Mattioli delves into Amazon's unparalleled rise to dominance, revealing its cutthroat tactics, including leveraging seller data, dominating online retail, and exploiting partners. With its AWS service and private label brands, Amazon extends its reach across industries while evading taxes and copying competitors. This strategic approach has allowed Amazon to control multiple sectors, fundamentally reshaping the global economy.

Jessie's Pick | Curiosities by Anne Fleming  🇨🇦

-

Why we chose this: Anne Fleming is a phenomenal Canadian writer and her writing is marked with intelligence and humour. Anne writes across genres but always ties her novels back home with themes that are important to her. In Curiosities, she takes a step back into the past and away from her usual contemporary fare, with wonderful writing and an engaging storyline, this is one to look out for.
-
About this book Curiosities begins with Anne, an amateur historian in the present day, stumbling upon five seventeenth-century manuscripts that collectively narrate a unique tale. After a village in England is ravaged by the Plague, only two children, Joan and Thomasina, survive. Accused of witchcraft, their guardian is separated from them, setting Joan on a path to a manor house and Thomasina on a sea voyage to Virginia, disguised as a boy named Tom. As adults, Tom and Joan reunite and fall in love but face persecution for their relationship. To save Joan, Tom flees to the North, leaving Anne to unravel their story and contribute her perspective to a time when the true nature of Tom and Joan defied societal labels.

Jessie's Pick | A History of the World in 12 Shipwrecks by David Gibbins

-

Why we chose this: Gibbins is a renowned underwater archaeologist and has dived at most of the sites referenced in his book. He deftly weaves the excitement of discovery and exploration with an explanation of how these shipwrecks can tell us about the lives of the people living at the time. Personally, I've always been fascinated by shipwrecks and Gibbins' combination of archaeology and culture was irresistible. His writing is captivating and the topics discussed offer an engaging reading experience for history buffs.
-
-

Lauren's Pick | Your Blood, My Bones by Kelly Andrew

-
-
Why we chose this: Andrew combines the supernatural and the mysterious with an engaging romance. This has a friends to enemies and then to lovers trope that makes this book angsty in all the right ways. Both tragic and haunting, Andrew will keep you hooked until the very last page as the characters rely on each other to survive.

Hollace's Pick | Funny Story by Emily Henry

-
-
Why we chose thisEmily Henry is just amazing! Her books are romances but often tackle so much more than that. I have read everything she's written so a new book from her is always a highlight of my year. I am sure it will have great characters as well as phenomenal banter and after the release of Happy Place, which made me sob, I don't think it will be a funny story (in the best possible way).
-
About this bookDaphne, heartbroken after discovering her fiancé Peter is in love with his childhood best friend Petra, starts a new chapter in Waning Bay, Michigan. She becomes roommates with Petra's ex, Miles Nowak, who is scruffy and chaotic. Hollace's Pick | Wild Love by Elsie Silver  🇨🇦

-
-
Why we chose this: I have never rated one of Elsie Silver's books anything less than 4 stars, she just knows what she's doing. This is the start of a new series that still takes place in the world of her previous books (which is in Canada so another plus) and will have appearances of characters we already know and love.
-
